Standard Precautions and Notes:

  1. This plugin ONLY works on WordPress Multisite and is not for use on single site installations
  2. It now supports both subdomain and subdirectory mode! It will auto-detect and auto-render appropriate UI.
  3. It might have unpredictable results on multisite networks installed in a subdirectory of a domain. If your root network site lives at or something similar, you might experience issues. More info here.
  4. Use only lower case in step #2 for the target site name field
  5. Make sure that the name of the site that you are cloning is NOT the same as its title. For example, if you select a master source site to clone that is or you need to make sure that its title in Settings > General is NOT “Site1″ or “site1″ [without quotes of course]
  6. Also make sure that the name of the source site is not contained in the name of the target site
  7. We have used the NS Cloner on production systems for months and months without issue. That doesn’t mean your scenario won’t find some new condition that could cause you some headaches. Unlikely, but always possible. We recommend getting familiar with it on a test system before you deploy it to a critical network.
  8. And for the love – backup your data. This plugin operates at the database level to work its magic. We’ve run it hundreds of times on our own sites and client sites, and tested it thoroughly. It’s safe. But don’t take our word for it.

Documentation is built into the NS Cloner. We tried to design it’s UI/UX to be simple and self-explanatory. The interface itself will walk you through how to use it. Remember, you must be a super admin logged into the Network Admin dashboard in order to find the NS Cloner Pro menu item under the Sites main menu. This will give you an idea of how the Cloner works:

Typical Workflow for using the NS Cloner:

  1. Set up 1 or more “template” sites exactly the way you want your clones to start out
  2. Go to your Network Dashboard > Sites > NS Cloner
  3. Select the “template” site you that want to clone, type the name of the new site, and put in it’s Title
  4. Clone Away!
  5. Yes, it really is that easy.

Primary Use Cases:

  1. Developers who host and manage multiple client sites in their own multisite environment – this will allow you to rapidly roll out new baseline sites with all your favorite standard plugins and configurations in place – no more tedious manual repetitive entry.
  2. Organizations which provide “member” sites and want to be able to reduce the site spin up time to almost nothing.
  3. Affiliates that host numerous sites through Multisite and are looking for a way to increase reach and decrease deployment times.
  4. Designers who want to be able to create several versions of sites to test and play with different theme designs in parallel without having to re-install all the same plugins and base themes over and over.

How the NS Cloner Works

Having trouble finding the Cloner in the Dashboard?

Multisite Network Admin Menu Item

Multisite Site Dashboard Menu Item

Can I clone the main site / root site (ID:1)?
YES – as of version we have added this complex capability. The Multisite database structure does not lend itself to automating cloning on the main site. All subsites create new tables that are numbered with the site ID. However, the main site’s tables are not numbered and are mixed in with other global network tables. It gets even more complicated when other plugins install their own tables. There’s no simple way to know what tables in the database should be cloned or not for the main site whereas it is very straight forward for subsites because they are numbered with the site ID. However, we have implemented a way to do this.

Does the NS Cloner work on subdomain networks as well as subfolder networks?

Why do I get a white screen after cloning a site?
Usually this means that the clone operation did not complete successfully. The most common cause for this is a script timeout. By default, PHP script execution for a single script is set to 30 seconds. This might not be enough time for larger sites with numerous posts, pages, and users to complete cloning – especially since the Cloner runs advanced search and replace operations against every table cloned to the new site to make sure that it reflects the new site url and title throughout all its data. Try increasing the max_execution_time in php.ini or wherever your host supports updating PHP configuration settings.

Does the NS Cloner work in multi-db environments (multi-db is NOT the same as multisite – multi-db is a special plugin that spreads the WordPress installation across several databases rather than a single database)?
No – sorry, not at this time.

Does the NS Cloner work for cloning from one server to another?
This feature is also not currently available, but an addon for server-to-server cloning is on the roadmap for future release.

When I click the “Clone Away” submit button, the new site is created, but the response generates a 404 page not found?
Check with your host. They probably have an agressive mod_security configuration and might need to add or modify some rules for you. For example, rule 1234234 needs to be present which allows dots in querystring parameters.

This plugin is amazing and such a life saver, I have developed a network for a big company that makes Remote Control cars and they have over 50 countries currently as distributors, so a blog for each country was daunting.

Enter NS Cloner Pro :-) I created a default site and cloned away with no issues at all.

    Thanks Andrew and Never Settle

In the Lite Version on Line 417:

    $dst_blogs_dir = str_replace($source_id, $target_id, $src_blogs_dir );

    change this to:

    $dst_blogs_dir = str_replace( “/” . $source_id, “/” . $target_id, $src_blogs_dir );

    — — —

$source_id is 4 and $target_id is 8 and the pathname is:

    /www/htdocs/w00f3b9f/depesche2 “4″ /wp-content/blogs.dir/4

    changed to

    /www/htdocs/w00f3b9f/depesche2 “8″ /wp-content/blogs.dir/8

All Numbers in the pathname changed… Not only the $source_id.

Thanks, Christian! Great catch. It isn’t a perfect solution because there could still be path names that have /# in them before the end where the IDs come in. But your fix is far better than the way it was, and we’ve updated both the Free version and the Pro version and commented to your credit. Please check your email for a coupon code for a discount on the Pro version as our way of saying thanks for the contribution!

      All the best!
